About Popo Gardens

Popo Gardens is a small orchard located in the mountains of Kyotamba-cho, Kyoto Prefecture. Since first planting pawpaws 16 years ago, our orchard has grown into a lively and delicious fruit garden that also includes kiwi, blueberries, jujube, feijoa, and persimmon. We currently have approximately 700 pawpaw trees.

What is a Pawpaw?

Pawpaw is a fruit native to North America, also known as the "Custard of the Forest" or "Ice Cream of the Forest." It has a creamy, sweet flavor reminiscent of banana and mango.

Currently, very few farmers in Japan grow pawpaws, making them hard to find in regular supermarkets — earning them the nickname "legendary fruit." At Popo Gardens, we import grafted trees of premium varieties not widely available in Japan, propagate them through grafting, and sell the fruit we grow.
